New to Alcoholics Anonymous?

If you're thinking about attending your first A.A. meeting, you're in the right place. Learn what to expect and how to get started.

What Is Alcoholics Anonymous?

Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other so they may solve their common problem and help others recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership.

You don't need a referral, appointment, or previous experience with A.A. to attend a meeting.

What to Expect at Your First A.A. Meeting

Attending your first meeting can feel intimidating, but you don't need to know anything about A.A. before you arrive.

Every group is a little different, but here's what you can generally expect:

  • A friendly welcome: Someone may greet you, but you don't have to introduce yourself.

  • No pressure to speak: You're welcome to simply listen.

  • No cost to attend: Voluntary contributions may be collected, but you're not required to contribute.

  • Anonymity and privacy: Members are encouraged to respect one another's anonymity.

  • Different meeting formats: Some meetings focus on discussion, while others involve readings from A.A. literature or speakers sharing their experiences.
